SERIES EIGHT

What It's All About

Throughout time women have been excluded from the world of professional music and especially composing. Those few who succeeded in the compositional world were marginalised, forbidden to write certain types of music and had their reputations questioned.

This series looks at the lives of some female composers from the Medieval to the present day and traces their journeys, the sacrifices they had to make and the exquisite music they wrote.

Music's Mechanical Make-Up

Melody

Melodies can convey patriotism, hope, fate, love, loss and can touch our most raw emotions. The can bridge the gap between cultures when language fails us. But what makes a good melody and how does this differ throughout the world?

1

Rhythm

Essentially rhythm is a series of sounds and silences put together to create a pattern. But rhythm is much more than that, it makes us want to tap our feet and swing our hips.

2

Harmony

Harmony is the mysterious element in music, developed in the Middle Ages to make beautiful music closer to G-d. Since then it has taken the most incredible journey becoming more complex over time.

3

Bass

The Bass is the youngest element in music, being only around 400 years old; but it is the foundation of music and is essential to all forms of modern music.

4

The Orchestra

Musician’s have always played together, but when did an ensemble of instruments actually become an orchestra? Has it always been the same or has it changed over time?

5

Music and Literature

Music and words have always been entwined together. Beautiful words are made more poignant by sweeping melodies while words give music an added dimension. The history of their relationship is fascinating.
